When you decide to paint a room the first thing that comes into mind is what types of colors are you thinking about? There’s all kinds and types of different paints to choose from, types of color, types of finish.So you can choose from many types of different kind of paint but the first one that should be considered  is for your prep work.There are different kinds of primers that are used for different purposes. If you have an interior wall paint job that is in excellent condition and doesn’t have any marks on it or doesn’t need any plaster repairs than a regular basic latex primer should do. I usually prime walls that are a large change in color, because the primer cost less than does the finish coat. If you have a large room that’s being painted with some darker color and it will take over gallon of paint to prime it then it makes sense to use up a cheaper gallon of primer  Than to use the more expensive finish coat just to prime with. But if you’re using a color very similar or close to the color that’s on the interior wall now,  then it is smarter to just put 2 finish coats on.
If you’re interior walls are clean from pen marks or stains but you have some drywall plaster repairs then you need to get a primer sealer that seals the repair spot so when the top coat is applied you will not be able to see a dull spot where the drywall repair was done.
If you have drywall that has graffiti on it such as pen marks or crayon then you should use a solvent-based or shellac-based primer. I have found that latex based sealer primers don’t work as well as solvent based primers. Some marks still  bleed through water-based sealer primers even though they say that it won’t. There are a couple different types of bases for these specialty primers, the first one that I use is a shellac-based sealer primer. This primer dries very quickly and you can paint over top of it within  just a few minutes. The other one is a solvent-based primer that takes around half an hour if you buy quick dry.You can buy this product in either a can that you can dispense from and roll it on or even by a spray can and spray it on. Generally for a few spots I use a spray can is much more convenient and no cleanup.
Lastly if you have glossy walls and you’re not sure whether it has latex paint or oil based paint on the wall the best thing to do is prime it with either an oil based or a shellac-based primer sealer. This for sure will allow you to apply latex coats of paint over top of it without it coming off.

Many times people will put latex paint over top of doors which have been painted with semigloss oil paints. Most new homes at the beginning have a lot of drywall nail pops.this is when the head of the nail pops out or the plaster pops out from the head of the nail. This could be cause by faulty initial installation, some external stress on the wall, or loose panels. Probably the biggest cause of nail pops is because the lumber is shrinking behind the drywall. Pops usually occur several months after they had been completed. To fix nail popping remove any loose gypsum and torn paper from around the screw press the panel firmly against the stud and re-screw a new screw into a fresh part of the drywall 1 1/2 inches above the original hole and 1 1/2 inches below the original hole. Make sure that you don’t break the paper driving the screw in. The screw should go in just far enough that it dimples the drywall a little. And when you pass your plaster over top of it, it  should be nice and smooth.

In most instances probably you have half-inch drywall you should use a 1 1/8 inch drywall screw.

If you’re nailing the drywall double nailing everything. I find nails are more prone to loosening up. And don’t forget blow with a hammer the nail head in with just enough force to create a small dent in the drywall being careful not to break the paper because this will greatly reduce the effect of the nail.

Quick Note: I always do my repairs with drywall screws not nails.

When you’re finished screwing a panel up check to make sure that all your screws are the same level and holding the drywall securely. If you have a couple of screws that are still above grade, take your screw gun and re-torque them to the proper depth. Electric drywall screw guns are adjustable for depth as you screw in the head of the electric screw gun the deeper the screw will penetrate so this way you can adjust the depth of the screw by rotating the head of the screw gun.

Bulge:

in your drywall:around the fasteners. This can be caused by driving in the fastener to deep in. In this case when you put plaster over top of this it will tend to swell creating an unsightly bulge. It is better to simply remove the fastener and install to fresh fasteners one above one below.

Sagging Drywall

Your ceiling could end up sagging after a few months. This could be caused by excessive weight of insulation or texture mix on your ceiling. Also there might be too much moisture or humidity in the air. It is also possible that the initial installation had used the wrong thickness of drywall. Consider using a thicker drywall or double screwing or nailing it up.

Preparing Holes in Drywall

If you have any holes in your drywall moving furniture or some other kind of damage the best way to fix this is remove any loose paper that is either bulged out or hanging, inspect the damaged area to make sure that there has been no drywall pushed up into a bunch causing a lump higher than the drywall. Everything has to be below grade to be able to be plastered over top of without making any hump in the drywall. If you have some exposed paper (this usually is a dark brown paper) it’s best to peel it off if it’s loose and if not then it’s advisable to seal it with some shellac or some kind of primer sealer. This will stop the paper from bubbling up when the wet plaster is applied to it.

before you attempt to do some faux finishing on a wall try first in a place you don’t mind experimenting on or choose a piece of drywall big enough to try your experiment. You probably cringe when the paint salesperson tell you the price of that can of Benjamin Moore top line paint. Believe it or not if you are not a professional painter this paint is even better for you because it’s more forgiving to your inexperienced way of application.

When you’re doing interior wall painting there are couple of considerations which you have to be aware of.

The first one is how well the paint covers, this means if you’re going over a white wall with for example a beige colored paint, if you’re using a lower line latex paint you most probably are going to have to put on two coats. This means that you’re going to have to paint the wall twice which in turn means you’re going to be using twice as much paint.

But if you use top line interior latex paint such as the Benjamin Moore design line you will probably be able to do this in one coat. And this means you’re using up half the amount of paint not to mention you’re using the paint roller and brush only half the time which usually saves you on your working time.

Other benefits of using the top line paints is that they level out and smooth itself much more evenly and nicely than cheaper latex paints. And leaving a more filled and smoother painted surface.

Basically the wheel is designed in such a way that you are the three basic colors “red” “blue” “yellow” space equidistant apart from each other around the wheel. And as you go around the wheel starting any color you will see the color changing as you are going your left or right slowly morphing into the next primary color these are usually widgets of color. As you go left or right from the primary color the exact opposite corresponding widget which is 180° around the wheel to your primary color is the secondary colors. And these colors are “green” which is opposite to the red and the next one is “orange” which is opposite to the blue and “Violet” which is opposite to yellow.

So if you have already chosen some drapery that you like and you want to coordinate this with you all colors he would be wise to get a color wheel To help you out in your choice. If you are planning multiple color arrangements in your room using the color wheel you will find it easier.

So to start with just by understanding the way the color wheel works you can find your color on the color wheel for example you can find a drapery color on your color wheel and once you identify the color looked at the opposite side of the wheel to get your complimentary color.

Variating colors in a space whether it’s a painted wall or trim or even wallpaper it can greatly change the room. Things you can do with paint for example, you can make a room seem warmer or cooler. A correctly orchestrated color scheme can actually make something look more in the background or more upfront. The theory of color in a nutshell.

There are three primary colors which are read yellow and blue. Mixing these colors produces secondary colors. Secondary colors are, orange (a mix of red and yellow), green (a mix of yellow and blue), and purple/violet (a mix of blue and red)

and once a primary color is mixed with the secondary color it becomes something known as a tertiary color like, red/orange or blue/green. The (3) primary colors, red yellow and blue have the secondary colors of their complementary opposites, example: green — red, violet — yellow and orange — blue.
